The Rough Guide to Cumbia plus Los Corraleros De Majagual

Colombian Cumbia is the beloved tropical dance music characterized by rolling drums, maracas and the royally raspy guacharaca scraper. This Rough Guide highlights the best from cumbia's coastal Afro-Caribbean roots through to its entirely modern incarnations. Explore the vintage works of Lucho Bermúdez, Los Corraleros de Majagual through to the urban stylings of El Hijo De La Cumbia and Los Chapillacs.

Cumbia is fast and lively and the opening tracks prepare you for an exciting journey with the fast accordion playing beautifully accompanied by some neat brasswork. 'Cumbia Cienaguera' is a classic song known to all Colombians; there is an eery brilliance to 'La Luna Y El Pescador' (The Moon and the Fisherman) and 'La Banda Borracha' (The Drunken Band) features some impressive sax and trombone.

The Vestibule (The Rotonda), (The Atrium), is the first section of the imperial corridor in Diocletian's Palace that led from the Peristyle which was once the formal entrance to the imperial apartments of the Palace.

It was built up to the beginning of the 4th century, as the original part of the ancient palace. It is a circular hall, once topped with a dome, 17 meters in height and 12 meters in diameter. Built as a grand meeting hall only for and selected audiences such as ambassadors. The entrance was adorned with a large door dimension of 2.56 x 3.96 ms with an abundance of relief decorations. The Vestibula area was cleared of four semicircular niches that were filled with statues of unknown deities. Southeast of the vestibule is the Medieval quarter, where the oldest building is the early Romanesque house from the 10th century.

The space is used by klapa groups to perform popular folk songs during the summer months, taking advantage of the acoustics for an a cappella performance.

Malaysian-Indian singer Amirah unique new single release ‘Tell Me’..timeless quality and a search for meaning

Malaysian-Indian singer Amirah recently released her new single ‘Tell Me’.

Amirah delivers a unique sound, blending traditional elements such as tanbura, gamelan and tabla with modern pop production, giving her songs a timeless quality that allows her pacifist message to truly shine.

‘Tell Me’ is almost cinematic in scope with luscious live strings and modern pop drums. Originally composed in Malay, it explores faith, freedom, and the endless search for meaning for who we truly are as a people. As she explains ‘Let's unite for a world where we are all accepted for our differences, regardless of race, religion, culture, nationality, status, gender, or sexual orientation.’

Amirah's voice has a lush and breathtaking sound that is both stunning and sublime and allows her to deliver the message of this most important song with confidence and clarity.

Putumayo presents Mexico...savor the spicy and romantic flavors of Mexican music

Various ‎– Putumayo Presents Mexico
Label: Putumayo World Music ‎– PUT 187-2
Format: CD, Compilation
Country: US
Released: 2001
Genre: Latin
Style: Norteño, Ranchera, Trova, Son

Even in the northern states, Mexican music is easy to find on American radio, but airplay almost exclusively consists of the Tex-Mex norteño style. In contrast, there's barely an accordion in earshot on this sparkling collection of traditionally rooted songs. Los Bravos del Norte de Ramon Ayala weigh in with the bouncy ranchera "Andan Dicendo," but on all other fronts guitar trills rather than squeezebox sighs propel the music. With violin swoops and falsetto vocals, La Calaca unleash the galloping son huasteco/ranchera "Rogaciano." The same ensemble graces the gusto "El Tecolote" with less ferocity but equivalent momentum. Los Lobos dip way into their past with a 1977 version of the son jarocho sped up into a self-proclaimed son loco on "Flor de Huevo," complete with dizzying fretwork and a flailing rhythm. The delicate instrumental son istemeno wedding song "Mediu Xhiga" from Dueto de los Hermanos Rios brings exquisitely ornamented requinto guitar from Mexico's Pacific Coast. Rounding out the set is a slice of Latin cabaret complete with braying clarinets and a gritty vocal takeoff on, of all things, a traditional Mexican Christmas carol via Lhasa de Sela's "Los Peces." --Bob Tarte (Amazon review)

Ravi Shankar ‎– Bridges - The Best Of Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar KBE, born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury,(7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012), whose name is often preceded by the title Pandit (Master) and "Sitar maestro", was an Indian musician and a composer of Hindustani classical music. He was the best-known proponent of the sitar in the second half of the 20th century and influenced many other musicians throughout the world. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999.

Shankar was born to a Bengali Brahmin family in India, and spent his youth as a dancer touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.

In 1956, Shankar began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Beatles guitarist George Harrison. His influence on the latter helped popularize the use of Indian instruments in pop music in the latter half of the 1960s. Shankar engaged Western music by writing compositions for sitar and orchestra, and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992, he served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. He continued to perform until the end of his life.

Klezmer...Yiddish Swing Music...various artists compilation

Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Played by professional musicians called klezmorim in ensembles known as kapelye, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. In the United States the genre evolved considerably as Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who arrived between 1880 and 1924, came into contact with American jazz. During the initial years after the klezmer revival of the 1970's, the American sub-variety was what most people knew as klezmer, although in the 21st century musicians began paying more attention to the original pre-jazz traditions as revivalists including Josh Horowitz, Yale Strom and Bob Cohen have spent years doing field research in Eastern/Central Europe. Additionally, later immigrants from the Soviet Union, such as German Goldenshtayn, took their surviving repertoires to the United States and Israel in the 1980's.

Compared with most other European folk-music styles, little is known about the history of klezmer music, and much of what is said about it remains uncertain. There is, however, a heavy influence of Romani music, since many Jews and Roma lived side by side in Europe.
