Marisa dos Reis Nunes ComIH (born 16 December 1973), known professionally as Mariza (Portuguese pronunciation: [mɐˈɾizɐ]), is a Portuguese fado singer.

Mariza was born in Lourenço Marques, Portuguese Mozambique, to a Portuguese father, José Brandão Nunes, and a Mozambican mother, Isabel Nunes. When she was three years old, her family moved to Metropolitan Portugal, and she was raised in Lisbon's historic quarters of Mouraria and Alfama. While very young, she began singing in a wide variety of musical styles, including gospel, soul and jazz. Her father strongly encouraged her to adopt fado; he felt that participating in the traditional music would grant her greater acceptance in the Portuguese community. Mariza has sold over 1 million records worldwide.

Fado em Mim is her debut studio album, released in April 2002 by Dutch label World Connection. Mariza was initially rejected by Portuguese labels, who were uneasy working with an unproven artist. The album was picked up by Dutch label World Connection and was later released in 32 countries.

Fado (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈfaðu]; "destiny, fate") is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820's in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins. Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sense of resignation, fate and melancholy.

Putumayo Presents Cape Verde...various artists compilation

Cape Verde presents the music of the islands just 300 miles off West Africa's Senegalese coast. Drawing from Portuguese and African influences, the music of Cape Verde is most often rooted in a sensually languid and rhythmically complex cousin of the blues called morna. Largely popularized on the international scene by the meteoric popularity of Cesaria Evora (who contributes here with "Cabo Verde Manda Mantenha"), Cape Verdean music has enjoyed a wider listenership. This collection, however, cleverly balances the alluring minor key of morna with the lesser-known merry festivity of coladeira, the Cape's party music, and a jazz-tinged dance music called funana. 

Mysteriously bewitching, Cape Verde is a gorgeous melange of elegant piano, acoustic strings, rousing horn sections, propulsive drumming, flamboyant keyboards, and superb vocalists.

Madredeus...Faluas Do Tejo: Lisboa 2005...Portugese folk in purest form

In Faluas do Tejo, Madredeus presents a collection of songs about the city of Lisbon. The arrangements are mostly simple and folksy, showcasing Teresa Salguero's voice in its purest form.

"Lisboa, Rainha do Mar" opens the album with a light barcarole-sounding song that immediately conjures images of the Tagus river.

"Nevoas da Madrugada" carries a simple melody and light musical arrangement. 

"O Cais Distante" is a moody, almost bluesy meditation.

"Na Estrada de Santiago" is a speak-sing number where Teresa sings a beautiful background melody that reinforces the power of her spoken parts.

"La de Fora" stands out as a happy, almost dance-able tune that has an alternating root-fifth bass line. 

"O Canto do Saudade" finishes the album with a seaside, drink-in-hand feel that makes you want to start all the songs over again from the beginning. Notably, Teresa sings in a lower range for this song and you get to hear a different tone that is much more comfortable to the ear, especially if you don't like her very high parts.
