Roots of O.K Jazz Congo Classics 1955-1956 various artists

Originally released on Crammed in 1993, this beautiful 20-song collection - re-released as part of the "Congo Classics" series on Crammed that began with "Roots of Rumba Rock" in 2006 - documents the fine early work of the "Tout-Pouissant Orchestre Kinois de Jazz" or Almighty Kinshasa Jazz Orchestra, as led by the imposing "Grand Maitre" Lokanga La Ndju Pene Luambo Makiadi aka FRANCO.

These artists were creating a style of music that was to conquer all of Africa and strongly influence several generations of musicians.

Songs for Desert Refugees...a compilation in aid of the refugees from Northern Mali

On January 17, 2012, insurgents fighting for the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (NMLA) attacked the town of Menaka in the far east of Mali. The fighting soon spread all over the deserts of northern Mali, provoking the most serious crisis that the country had faced since independence in 1960. Tens of thousands of Touareg, Songhoi, Peulh and Arab people fled from the fighting to the relative safety of neighboring countries. The result was the worst refugee crisis in the southern Sahara in decades.

Songs for Desert Refugees features a superb mix of desert music, including rare or unreleased tracks by some of the world's best-known Touareg groups, from Mali (Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Terakaft, Tartit), Niger (Bombino, Toumast, Etran Finatawa) and Algeria (Nabil Baly Othmani, Faris). The music on this compilation is the sound of what the Malian deserts can be; intense, joyful, beautiful, proud, poetic and peaceful. It is dedicated to all those who are working to make it so again. All involved in producing the album gave their services for free. Other artists include: Ibrahim Djo Experience, Amanar and Tadalat.

As with 2005's Rough Guide to the Sahara, the 12 tracks, most previously unreleased and all postdating that prophetic piece of genre-making, progress like a single expression toward the showy new jack guitars of Tadalat and Bombino and the overdue female voices of Toumast and Tamikrest. --MSNBC Expert Witness

...the album as it stands is masterful, and certainly one of the strongest world music albums of the year. It serves equally well as an introduction to this exciting strain of guitar-based African music and as a new set of tunes for listeners already familiar with the genre. --Popmatters

  1. Amous Idraout Assouf d'Alwa (Tinariwen)
  2. Warktifed (Tamikrest)
  3. Blues du Désert Part 1 (Ibrahim Djo Experience)
  4. Derhan Alkher (Faris & Terakaft)
  5. Teswa Ténéré Desert Version (Nabil Baly Othmani)
  6. Ténéré (Amanar)
  7. Taghdart (Tadalat)
  8. Gourma (Etran Finatawa)
  9. Nak Essanagh (Terakaft)
  10. Aïtma (Toumast)
  11. Tigrawahi Tikma Live Version (Bombino)

A Voyage to The Sahara and The Middle East....music by Yeskim

Yeskim is a producer, arranger, engineer and musical contractor. He has produced over 250 CD's, mostly New Age and World Music among many other music styles.

Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands - 4th March 1949, Levantis Yeskim was a Guitarist/Keyboard player in Dutch Rock bands, (e.a. The Tee-Set with Peter Tetteroo "Ma belle amie" ) before switching to the music publishing field. The experience honed his skills at hearing a good song. Around 1986, Yeskim became the vice president of Syntron Studios Santa Fe NM, and a staff music producer with Philips USA- Digital Recording division. Some of the highlights of his stint were producing gold records ( Venus 1972 w Robbie van Leeuwen - Shocking Blue) and the achievement of many Music Awards (e.g. Golden Harp 1984) . He co-engineered the Beach Boys "Holland" album early in his career begin seventies.

Later in his Career he composed the hit "Never heard a better song" (Vocals by Pim Elshof), a Surf song inspired by the Beach Boys, used as title track for the movie "American Summer" (Seven Arts). Using the same recording techniques and tricks as Brian Wilson did in the heydays of the Beach Boys. The lyrics were actually the titles of Beach Boys songs.

UA president Denny Diante tapped Yeskim's music in the USA and introduced Yeskim to the film industry. Yeskim was then contracted by Seven Arts film company in 2008, to produce film-music scores, sound effects and soundtracks , e.a. for "American Summer" (Seven Arts) , "Incident in paradise"(WB) and many other movies.

"Sahara and the Middle East" is a new age/world/ambient mix released in 1998. It combines sounds and atmospheres from North Africa where "hidden life awakes under the canopy of stars" where impressions of ancient cultures still live on today. A beautiful album to listen to it will give you a taste for sounds of the region with voices, instruments and themes that are unique to that part of the world.

The Rough Guide to West African Music

West African Music

If you haven't been exposed to West African music, then this is the perfect introduction. Some of the songs are absolutely captivating, Oumou Sangare and Ali Farka Toure especially. The selections aren't limited to bongo drums and acapella chants either, with other artists such as Super Rail Band, Toumani Diabate, Kante Manfila, Bajourou, Orchestra Baobab and Mansour Seck. A brilliantly sourced and produced album.
