Muzsikás: The Bartók Album - featuring Márta Sebestyén & Alexander Balanescu

 

The Muzsikás Ensemble was founded in 1973 modelling the early village peasant ensembles, the "muzskás"-es (music-makers) and they reflect the same world of sound. They have learned authentic music-making from the presently existing village orchestras and musicians. On their first LP, "Living Hungarian Folk Music 1", they performed tunes collected from several regions of Hungarian-speaking areas. They were awarded the title "Young Masters of Folk Art" in 1974.

On this release they collaborate with Hungarian folk singer, composer and actress Sebestyén Márta (who performs regularly with Muzsikás) and composer/violinist Alexander Balanescu.

Harem [Turkish Percussion Group] – Rhythm Colour

 

Harem is a Turkish percussion group that specializes in high-energy drumming, incorporating instruments like the darbuka, bendir and zils. They create music with a blend of traditional Turkish percussion and world percussion instruments such as the djembe and tabla. The group is known for its dynamic performances and their music has been released on albums like Rhythm Colour, Harem II (Time Of Rhythm), Harem III and Rhythm Forever.

Instrumentation: The group's sound is built on traditional Turkish percussion, with the darbuka being a prominent instrument. They also incorporate other instruments like bendirs, shakers and zils, along with world percussion such as djembes and tablas.

Los Desterrados was a Sephardic-flamenco band active in London between 2000 and 2019, who arranged original songs of the Jewish Sephardic diaspora, including from Turkey, Morocco and Greece, using instruments such as oud, flamenco guitar, saz, violin, flute and bass, singing in Ladino. They were nominated for a Songlines award in 2009.

Klezmer...Yiddish Swing Music...various artists compilation

Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Played by professional musicians called klezmorim in ensembles known as kapelye, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. In the United States the genre evolved considerably as Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who arrived between 1880 and 1924, came into contact with American jazz. During the initial years after the klezmer revival of the 1970's, the American sub-variety was what most people knew as klezmer, although in the 21st century musicians began paying more attention to the original pre-jazz traditions as revivalists including Josh Horowitz, Yale Strom and Bob Cohen have spent years doing field research in Eastern/Central Europe. Additionally, later immigrants from the Soviet Union, such as German Goldenshtayn, took their surviving repertoires to the United States and Israel in the 1980's.

Compared with most other European folk-music styles, little is known about the history of klezmer music, and much of what is said about it remains uncertain. There is, however, a heavy influence of Romani music, since many Jews and Roma lived side by side in Europe.
